EAL

At Lift Unity City we have many students who have English as a second language. Our students come from different backgrounds and cultures with a variety of needs and different learning styles.

English as a second language

We offer a tailored curriculum for EAL students that covers basic vocabulary in English and support in other curriculum areas. Support booklets are given to all EAL students to enable them to access work within their lesson regardless of their educational background. Our English interventions for the students take place in their normal working environment which is tailored to support EAL students to access the curriculum. They have daily access to an online programme called Flash Academy which is designed to improve literacy, written and oracy skills in a range of different subjects. As bilingualism and multilingualism is an asset the students are encouraged to learn English with the help of their first language.

KS3 EAL students are also offered intervention sessions in the library from our new support programme for reading with our Lexonic specialists.

KS4 EAL students receive one to one support on a Wednesday from the local EMAT team. These staff members are trained to work specifically with EAL students within the local authority.

All of our students have access to Flash Academy, Sparx maths, English Century and Sparx science. These are interactive learning resources that accelerate all students' subject knowledge. These online programmes enable the students to work in school and from home to ensure gaps within their education can be fulfilled ensuring they feel like a valued and supported member of Lift Unity City.
